Internal hole & inner cylinder blasting machine

Many rotating components have holes or slots, which need to be shot peened to improve fatigue resistance and extend service life. DISA has designed various methods for internal hole shot peening of inner holes.
Achieving optimal results demands precise control of the impact angle and complete coverage of the target area. Verifying full coverage typically requires specialized optical inspection equipment.

shot peening of hole

Shot peening small features—such as slots, bolt holes, and deep pockets—is highly challenging due to their complex geometry, which renders conventional nozzle peening ineffective. To address this, DISA developed specialized rotary lance shot peening equipment and nozzles. This system can be mounted on a manipulator robot and is fully interchangeable with standard nozzles.

The hole size and configuration typically determine the peening method; usually, peening can be performed from one side using a standard blast nozzle. As the part rotates 90°, the area of the hole directly impacted by the blast stream also shifts by 90°.

The peening lance is normally made with a 45° angle, and must be hardened or made of carbide to withstand the abuse of peening. Sometimes the pin is rotated along its axis to help ensure that even coverage is provided due to slight differences in surface configurations of the pin.

Deflector lances, long used for pipe ID blast cleaning, are also designed specifically for shot peening—typically with carbide tips for durability, available in various sizes and lengths, and often used for deep holes.

Twin media reclaim system is additionally supported by air wash and magnetic separator installed prior to vibrational sieve units. Vibrational sieves are equipped with standard size mashes for precise media classification.

Special two way media system is installed providing possibility of working with two different media sizes with ability for fast automatic interchange between them without means of manual operation.

Deflector pin and lance peening have limitations: pin peening requires access to both hole ends and struggles with uniform coverage, even with rotation, while non-rotating lances are impractical for large or complex parts. Hence, rotary lances are now widely used for hole ID peening.
